The Parks and Recreation Department offers several programs for youth and adults: Tae Kwon Do classes at the beginner and intermediate levels, Zumba fitness classes, Kick-It-Off (a fitness program), and basketball and t-ball/softball recreational programs. There are yearly family events: egg hunt and party, Community Pride Day, and a Halloween parade and party.
Bus trips are offered throughout the year. Annual on-your-own in New York City trips are held in April and December. Each summer, a bus trip to a nearby amusement park is offered (Lake Compounce, Dorney Park, Hershey Park – 3 year rotation). Other trips have included the Bronx Zoo, NY Aquarium, and Radio City Christmas Spectacular.
Two long-standing programs continue to be offered to our youth: Bethel Youth Ski program and the Bethel Summer Program. The ski program is held during January and February at area ski hills. Lift tickets and first year lessons are paid by the Park & Rec. program. The Bethel Summer Program is a three-hour six week program for elementary-aged children which includes arts and crafts, swim instruction, reading and dramatics, playground and sports.
An all day camp option is offered for 7 weeks in the summer. This program includes the activities of the summer program as well as free swim and more sports in the afternoon. Early drop-off times and extended week options are available.
Many of the summer programs are held at the Town of Bethel Park and Pool located on Old White Lake Turnpike. The park offers residents a basketball court, playground (nicknamed the “Big Red Fish”), pavilion, bathrooms, picnic area and a pool. There is a fee to use the pool – seasonal or daily passes may be purchased. The pavilion is available for rentals on weekends during the summer for a reasonable cost. Rental of the Pavilion is by reservation, forms available online.
The Parks and Recreation Department holds public input meetings throughout the year. Seasonal employment opportunities are available and there is a volunteer incentive program.
